My Interview in Forbes about How to Lead in a Diverse World
Forbes contributor and executive coach Heather MacArthur and I met in April through a LinkedIn message. Little did we know then that two months later, she would be interviewing me about the insights I published in Voices of Executive Women of Color, Part 1: Lived Truths. Our conversation is now represented in her June 2024 Forbes article about how to lead in a diverse world, titled Navigating Nuance: How Engaging with DEI Can Prepare Us for the Future.
The focus of the article is how engaging in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can help you strengthen skills in the human aspects of leadership that artificial intelligence can’t replace. This comes at a time when DEI is under attack in the context of the U.S. presidential election and in the human resources profession. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently removed the “E” in DEI, and is facing backlash for the decision.
Why does DEI matter so much? The world is becoming increasingly diverse. Engaging in DEI is about moving forward with change. It is also about growing your skills to stay relevant as a leader. It’s about:
- Developing agility
- Demonstrating empathy
- Imagining a different reality
- Thinking in multiple dimensions
- Harnessing positive intelligence
DEI is also about how to engage people as a leader. It shows up in:
- How you set expectations
- How you give feedback
- How you run meetings
- How you manage talent
Read the article in Forbes to learn how each of the bullets above can strengthen your leadership in an increasingly diverse world: Navigating Nuance: How Engaging with DEI Can Prepare Us for the Future.
